Casa Bartula - entrance
Casa Bartula - living room with kitchen

Casa Bartula is a spacious one-bedroom house,
sleeping 3 to 4 people over two floors, in a traditional "balconied" style
house typical of the local area (see picture at right), with great
views to the south and west.
The house is located in the village of Bolzano Novarese (which means "Bolzano in Novara province", to distinguish it from the larger town of Bolzano in the Dolomites), where there is an extremely popular pizzeria / restaurant (Pizzeria Sirena) just 2 minutes walk from the house. From the house there are great views of the village with the distinctive spire of the local church (see picture), and an amazing view of three other landmarks (see winter picture below) which are all lined up from this village: the twelfth century Tower of Buccione, the Madonna del Sasso church perched on a granite cliff on the other side of Lake Orta, and (on a clear day) the great snowy mass of Monte Rosa, the second highest mountain in the Alps, looming above the hills.
Casa Bartula has the use of the vine-covered eating area in the garden area in front of the house (see picture), and has off-street parking in front of the house.
Living room - and view from the house of the local parish church in Bolzano Novarese.
Downstairs, there is a combined kitchen and living room, original stone fireplace, and a double sofa bed. 21" Colour TV.
Upstairs there is the spacious master bedroom with double bed, with large wardrobe, and great views of the church and village. Thus the apartment sleeps three to four people.
Lake Orta is the most westerly of the Italian Lakes,
in the foothills of the Alps. It is well known within Italy as a holiday
area, but little known outside Italy, even though it is the "next lake along"
from Lake Maggiore. There are several small beaches on Lake Orta, including
a pay-beach Miami at the south end of the lake, with many possibilities for
sightseeing, country walks, mountain walks, lake sports, or just relaxing
in peaceful surroundings. Having known the area for some 14 years,
we provide seven favourite walks for you to try, which have proved to be
very populer with holidaymakers!
Bolzano Novarese is nearly 500 metres above seas level, and about three miles by road from the local centre of Orta San Giulio. Being in the foothills of the Alps, at the south end of the lake there are low hills, whereas at the north end the mountains are much higher (the Mottarone is nearly 1500 metres) and the distant Alpine peaks can be seen. The general effect is of a gentler - and more inviting! - landscape, compared with some of the larger alpine lakes. The air is noticeably clean and very pleasant, and in the height of summer when it can be quite hot in many parts of Italy, in Bolzano Novarese and around Lake Orta there can be a gentle and very welcome breeze of mountain air.
The Casa Bartula offers an excellent base at a very reasonable price to explore Lake Orta and further afield, with the convenience of a wonderful Pizzeria / Restaurant in the village, plus many more restaurants in the surrounding area.
There are many scheduled flights into Milan Malpensa airport, the closest airport, which is just 24 miles away. From the UK, you can now get very cheap flights with Ryanair to Turin Caselle, or Milan Bergamo airports (both 90 minutes drive) or with Easyjet to Milan Linate airport (70 minutes drive). There are all the main car hire companies at all these airports. See our table of flights for full details of flights to the region.
Alternatively, from the UK, it is an easy two days drive, as Lake Orta is just 670 miles from Calais - closer than the south coast of France, and just two-thirds of the distance to Tuscany!
