Holiday Homes at Lake Orta is run by
William
Schwitzer, with help from his wife Pardis, and their two teenage children.
William's *other* job is freelance Business Analyst in Financial Services, and William has wide experience of banks and insurance companies in the U.K. and Italy. William has a slightly cynical view of today's corporate culture, but is fascinated by the way business - and society as a whole - has developed in the last two decades, and in some ways feels that his involvement in technology-driven change has been at the heart of some of these developments.
From where the love of Italy? William's father
says that he was enamoured on a 1978 driving tour to San Remo, Pisa, and
Lake Como. A 1980 train trip to Venice, Ravenna and Florence certainly
made a big impression, as did a solo cycle trip the same year taking in the
Italian Riviera, the length of Lake Como, and the Maloja pass up to
St. Moritz, staying
mid-route with friends in a tiny village near Varese, whose incredible
hospitality I recall to this day, including the excitement of being part
of a large group of young people on a Saturday-night outing to Laveno on
Lake Maggiore for gelati. In the summer of 1985 William took
all his annual leave, plus some unpaid, to attend a month's intensive language
course in Florence at the
British Institute,
an experience I can thoroughly recommend to any young italophiles. This
prepared me well for my arrival in 1987 in the wonderful city of Turin, where
I remained for four years, working at the San Paolo bank in Turin, Olivetti
in Ivrea and a very traditional building society in Rome.
It was during this period that we *discovered* Lake Orta, and it immediately became our favourite Sunday outing, so that whenever friends and family came to stay, we would drive up from Turin for the day. In 1989 we stayed for a long weekend, and fell hopelessly in love with the area. In 1990 we bought our first holiday home at Vacciago, and got married in Orta San Giulio.
