Villa Gelsomina

The Panorama is one of five wonderful apartments in Villa Gelsomina, which is situated in the village of Lortallo, in a superb setting on the brow of a ridge running along the east side of Lake Orta, some 200 metres (in altitude) above the lake.  Villa Gelsomina was built to a very high specification (completed 2005) in the local style, and with holiday rentals in mind.  All apartments have a view of Lake Orta, and all apartments have a terrace, patio or balcony, where you can eat outside.  There is a 14 metre (46 foot) swimming pool in the well laid out grounds, and an outside chess set.  Villa Gelsomina has ample parking space on the quiet no-through-road, in a parking bay directly in front of the house.

Accommodation

Panorama sleeps 2 to 4 adults comfortably.  The master bedroom of the Panorama has a king size double bed, and double doors onto the balcony which runs along the length of the apartment, with a wonderful view of Lake Orta.  There is a further window to the east which lets in the morning sun.

The living area has a sofabed, which converts to two full size single beds.  There is a dining table (which can be folded away when using the outside dining table) and chairs, and large sliding windows (3.60m wide) onto the balcony.

Plan of Panorama

The balcony has a second dining table, and two sun-loungers.  Form the balcony there is a wide panorama of Lake Orta, with the Island of San Giulio, the Madonna del Sasso (white church on a precipice on the other side of the lake) and Monte Rosa, the second highest mountain in the Alps.  The colours of the lake are forever changing, and it is very easy to while away the time staring at the view, watching the sunset, and sitting out after dinner on the warm summer evenings....

Villa Gelsomina - the super pool - new 'California' sunbedsThe bathroom has a shower (no bath tub) and loo.

There is a television (local Italian television and Satellite TV) and video player (plus selection of English language videos for all age groups).  There is a telephone in the apartment, which takes incoming calls and local outgoing calls.

The apartment has independent gas central heating system for winter use.

Local Facilities

Villa Gelsomina is 3 km by road from the local centre of Orta San Giulio. There are several small beaches on Lake Orta (as Holiday Homes at Lake Orta clients, you are entitled to a 25% discount on the entrance to Miami beach).  The whole area is extremely well serviced by shops and restaurants (we provide a list of recommendations in your location pack).  There are many places to visit in the local area, lots of wonderful places for day trips for adults and children, great walks (we provide some favourite local walks for you to try), and a good selection of sporting and other local activities are available.

Lake Orta

This wonderful little lake (Lago d'Orta in Italian, Lacus Cusius in Roman times) is still  little known outside Italy, even though it is the "next lake along" from Lake Maggiore.  It lies in the foothills of the Alps, with low hills at the south end of the lake, but higher mountains at the north end (the Mottarone, which lies between Lakes Orta and Maggiore, is just under 1500 metres - great view of seven lakes, by the way!), and with views of the more distant Alpine peaks.  The scenery of Lake Orta is gentle - and inviting! - just as the local people are warm and hospitable...

Getting there

Most of our holidaymakers arrive by air at one of Milan's airports (the nearest, Milan Malpensa airport, is just 24 miles away) and pick up a hire car, often taking advantage of the cheap flights that are now available. See our table of flights for information on airlines flying to the region.  For U.K. holidaymakers who prefer to drive, it's an easy two day drive.  For full details of air, road, and rail transport to the area, see Tell Me About getting there.
